Open Letter To Vermont State Senator Peter Shumlin

The following letter was sent by email and published in the Caledonian-Record on
Historically, you have acted in the role of a secular progressive, championing such causes as transgender rights and the upgrading of Vermont's Civil Union law to be equal in status to marriage. However recently, while you were sleeping, a heterosexual couple in Derby Line were arrested for the crime of bigamy.

You have, seemingly, picked up the sword for the "social justice" lobby, however, has this transpired with a caveat?

Typically, your alternative lifestyle crusades have not extended beyond the homosexual and transgendered communities. Since the bigamist and polygamist community is an alternate lifestyle which, by definition, bases itself in heterosexuality, your failure to initiate and/or support legislation to decriminalize and mainstream these alternative lifestyles is a glaring example of the tarnish to be found in your armor of social justice. You have not turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to the cries of persecution by the homosexual and transgendered community, then why are you ignoring those same cries when coming from the bigamist/polygamist communities.

This certainly raises some fundamental questions regarding you and your secular progressive ideologues and the apparent hypocrisy you practice as you purport to represent the good citizens of Vermont, the majority of which are heterosexual.

1. Do you not read the newspaper and can you not see the persecution that is occurring in the heterosexual community?

2. Are you and your secular progressive pals heterophobic bigots who have no intentions of supporting social justice issues in the heterosexual community?

3. Are you and your secular progressive pals merely hypocrites, utilizing your positions as elected representatives to pursue personal agendas?

Once again, the elitist, secular progressive democrats have painted themselves into a very interesting corner. Perhaps you can explain your way out?

I look forward to a response.

Joe Bradley
