Recently, Congressional Republicans introduced an amendment, known as the "John Doe Amendment", to a piece of Homeland Security legislation. This amendment would have immunized citizens who, in good faith, report suspicious activity to police or law enforcement. This, after a lawsuit was filed against passengers on a US Airways flight who reported the suspicious behavior of a group of Muslim Imams (clerics). While I do not assert that these Imams were terrorists, the Democratic opposition to the "John Doe Amendment" supports the actions of terrorists by effectively silencing whistle blowers who would report suspicious activities.
The failure of the addition of this amendment sends a chilling message to the traveling public, "If you report suspicious activity on your flight, you may be sued."
Even though such an amendment would seem like a "no-brainer" and should have passed unanimously, it fell three votes short of the 60 votes required for it's passage. All 39 of the nay votes, which killed the passage of this amendment, came from Democrats save one, which came from Bernie Sanders who alleges to be an independent. In their continuing arrogance, Senate Democrats need not worry about such mundane matters of who is on the plane with them, they know very well who is on the plane with them because they fly private jets, not commercial aircraft such as all of the rest of us "little people" must fly. They never have to make the decision between reporting suspicious activity and financial ruin that "we the people" are now being forced to make.
After all, if the peasants have no bread, then let them eat cake.
